+1 “ΕΓΚΑΡΔΙΕΣ ΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ”

Το φεστιβάλ της Μονής Λαζαριστών, ολοκληρώνοντας το πρόγραμμα και της φετινής περιόδου , οργανώνει το +1 “Εγκάρδιες Πράξεις”, από τις 5 έως 25 Νοεμβρίου, όπου καλλιτέχνες, ηθοποιοί, εικαστικοί, χορευτές, μουσικοί συμπράττουν σ' ένα ''αντί φινάλε''.

Σας καλούμε να συμμετέχετε ενεργά μαζί με πάνω από 50 δημιουργούς αποδεικνύοντας ότι η ανάγκη για έμπνευση, πειραματισμό, δημιουργία και πολιτισμό είναι τα απαραίτητα για την ποιότητα του καθημερινού μας βίου.

25 εικαστικοί προτείνουν έργα σε συνδυασμό μικρών κειμένων.

“Όταν είδαμε την ζωγραφική το συζητήσαμε + ότι + αν είπαμε ήταν + δεν ήταν. Οι καλλιτέχνες καλούνται να συνοδεύσουν τα έργα τους που ως ζωγραφική τα είπαν + διαλέγουν κείμενα να τα συνοδέψουν. Όχι για να εξηγήσουν / ούτε να υποστηρίξουν. Τα ορίζουν έτσι ώστε να υπάρξουν μεταξύ των πολλαπλών κενών. Να δημιουργήσουν επιπλέον υποθέσεις μεταξύ τους. Να δημιουργήσουν νέες πιο σύνθετες εξαιρετικές παρουσίες μεταξύ των ελλείψεων + τελικά ο θεατής να μιλήσει – να το επικοινωνήσει.

Killinnosense

To πρώτo full length cd των Killinnosense κυκλοφόρησε το 2011 και περιλαμβάνει 12 κομμάτια συνολικής διάρκειας περίπου 50 λεπτών. Η ηχητική περιπλάνηση στη μουσική τους ξεκινά από την μελαγχολική pop του Nothing to Feel, περνά από το ηλεκτρικά φορτισμένο Escape για να πνιγεί στο συναισθηματισμό του Nobody. Στο 3^ο live του φετινού φθινοπώρου, στα πλαίσια του Φεστιβάλ της Μονής Λαζαριστών, θα παρουσιάσουν κομμάτια από το δίσκο τους, καθώς και διασκευές από τραγούδια που αγαπούν.

Action Field Kodra 2011, the visual arts exhibition organized by the Municipality of Kalamaria, is among the oldest and most important non-museum institutions of modern art in Greece, with the support of the Deputy Mayor of Culture, and participates in the Biennale of New Artists of the Mediterranean with the project “Action Field Kodra’s Stalking Horse”.

In order to correspond to the conditions and the needs of a very disordered period, art owes to regain its role as a mechanism of social cohesion and as an agent of ideological and political innovation. This year, a two-fold opening is being attempted: that of modern art in the public sphere and that of the Municipality of Kalamaria in the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

Within the context of this two-fold opening with the project “Action Field Kodra’s Stalking Horses”, it concludes this attempt to penetrate the urban web of the city. By using the canteens in an undermining way, it composes images that try with an account, a story, a myth, to activate a comment regarding the view of the world and of ourselves, the self-determination against encaging, exclusion, the participation in the public matters by providing extensions of thought. Images that try to articulate in an experiential way a hermeneutics, in the fashion that it is manifested within their sequence, with a poetic philosophy that might produce realizations of self-consciousness in order to allow us to articulate the resistance against a vulgar dislocation, by reforming and constantly pretending to the means; this will allow us to redefine with actions and to contribute to the joint reformation of a world in which we participate and dwell.

The known for their functions canteens acquire and create an imaginable typological route in the axis of the beach of Thessaloniki as a spatial sign of a casual focus within the public sphere and the organized life of the city, functioning at the same time as a spatial sign of the moments of the everyday urban time. With a rhythmo-logy they comprise artistic claims of the urban landscape, with the visual artists, the musicians, the poets, and the spectators-goers as the protagonists who expropriate the front wall and the backstage of the non-visual and un-experienced public space of Thessaloniki, by engaging unwittingly or suspiciously in the prose of the world…

DOCUMENTATION

In cooperation with the Action Field Kodra of the Municipality of Kalamaria and the support of the Deputy Mayor of Culture of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Biennale of New Artists of the Mediterranean, the 3rd visual arts painting studio of the Department of Visual and Applied Art of the University of Western Macedonia, Florina, in tuning with the 1st Painting studio, it will study the semasiology of the canteen (spatial sign) and its spatial penetrating function (“stalking horse”) in almost all the facts of the urban people gathering. This participation, at the same time, it will also constitute the first exhibition for the research regarding the thematic of “+τάγματος [tagma]” in the excipient “Πλατεία-Ζω [Square-I Live]”. The Space becomes the Locus and the Locus is the space, the field of the integration of the individual in society (The place is the space). The visual art function will be based on the life-giving poetry utterance in order to generate/formate the trojan idea of a wide ambiguity of the social against the overt and vulgarian individualism. The spatial sign “Stalking Horse Canteen” penetrates the shaped social and political landscape by organising asymmetries and peculiarities at the places where a person “parks”, where one spends his/her time, where one spends his/her leisure time in the squares, where one accompanies other people in the seemingly peaceful landscape.

The biblical well being after the Second World War, with the economists, one the one hand, turning the egoistic assumption into mathematics and, on the other hand, the limited elite putting make-up to the mask of interest or egotism, made the way of life consisting by a political expression of a hopeless anthropology, being organized in the Agora and the abstract Law.

The case of the artistic exploration of the canteens as Stalking Horses constitutes an empirical check of this impression: “The canteen is the Stalking Horse in facts of the crowd”: this sentence is an assumption around the organization (material and symbolic) of the sociability and the social relationships in a dominating commercialized reality. The artists that contribute to this research and the spectators that they will reaffirm or they will confute it on the basis of an empirical phenomenology. To project on the micro-social reality of the canteen the macro-phenomena of the social self is a way to focus on the forms of the social structures. Indeed, the effort is focused on that cluster of visual works and poems that give emphasis on the innate discontinuity, the open, the fragile, the plastic feature of the social elements, for example, of the sociability of the canteen.

Maria Papalexiou parallelizes the canteen with a theater of facts. In the shadow of the facts, of the happenings around the canteen, she organizes the symbolic construction of the whole, in regard to the members of the society. She names stickers as chairs of the theater pit, by passing people and customers, in an arrayed black human-like shadow of the canteen. Leonidas Gelos while seeking for a universal symbol in order to create a solid foundation of emotional experience, he studies the memory of the smell of the canteen, re-creating the impinged Vergina Star with edible materials. Bread for the shape of the star; mustard for gold; ketchup for blood. All these constitute the derivative, the ambiguity of the past, when it is established as a fertile historiography of the present. If the instinct of hunger acts as the lever of social behaviour, then greediness and the amoral pursue of its satisfaction can lead to conflicting behaviours of pretension. In that case, the maintenance of fellowship (+τροφικότητα) as tidiness becomes very difficult. The symbolic meanings that are being acquired by the material conditions of life in the framework of social companionship can transform the environment of a fellow (+τροφικού) sharing into a despicable antagonism. Two voracious people corrode (δια-βρώνουν=eat away) their relationships in the work of Gesthimani Hatzi.

Panagiota Koroniou attempts to invent the conceptual deity of the streets. She engraves on the wooden socle a gesture-like cross made of oddments of a frape coffee that holds a few rubbish, the material fragility of time and the unexplored religion of the routes. Her work is being “hanged” on the barrier between the cabin of the driver and the vehicle as a kind of amulet. A wrecked ghost-canteen made by Christos Ioannidis will float anchored in the restive geography of the accumulated debris that were produced by the reconstruction of the inshore pedestrian precinct, near the statue of Karamanlis. The degenerated ghost-canteen comes over against the floodlight of the city as an incontrollable image-ideogram of the social abstraction that “the city” constitutes. With the brunt of political collapse, away from any well-ordered organization, disinterested and implicative, it stands as a neuronic stimulus and organizes the non-space as an optical paradox.

The anticipation for a social life of popular mental outlook around the canteen gives emphasis on the contrasts from a series of interconnected events: I am hungry; I will eat some fast-food on a porcelain plate using a rustproof service. This latent representational structure upgrades the popular cart-postal of the canteen at the side of the road (counterpoint of the idyllic sandy beach) into an anticipated dinner. By denaturing the internal cohesion, by downsizing the space-shelter of the Stalking canteen, the aesthete image of a dining room with a limited number of chairs acquires a differentiating meaning. The painted in a representational way prepared dining table of Nikolas Antoniou acts as an amusing practical joke at a fashionable feast, as well as a fingerprint of the completeness of the “life of the canteen”. In this new disorder around the canteen, Thomas Makinantzis installs a barrel full of wheat that it is nailed with a supporting pole of a canteen-shaped loft of pigeons. As an artistic enigma for an exemplary pluralism of diet, the Stalking canteen-loft of pigeons depicts the un-de-jure naked life of the pigeons at the public square.

Penny Korre and Ilektra Maipa accumulate the non-rationality and the oddness of philosophy in a game with balloons. The seven paradoxes of Evoulides, philosopher from Megara who lived in the 4th century BC, are concealed in the pumped Stalking balloons. The frequenters of the canteen will choose a balloon, but only with its bust it will be revealed to them the hidden philosophical paradox. Nikos Pasalimaniotis designs in a bearing manner the sign of the whole action: a canteen subjected to the stalking horse, which in its irrational element brings to him the imaginably recognisable object of deceit. However, the drawing of this canteen remains an arbitrary, incompliant, and infracting presence at events of restraint (the canteen’s penetration to the occupied Constitution Square in the summer of 2011), which moves with the certainty of an ambulance, parks with the ease of a TV-van and passes around the commons of the beleaguered.

Kiki Stoubou with an elastic fabric of 100 meters long will unite the artistic form of the canteen into the same space, as a drop-curtain of the everyday “action” of the exhibition. Thus, during the day and until the evening opening of the action, the passer-by will have the opportunity to face the assembly of the works onto a black bundle. The Stalking space, in this way, is being reconstructed sufficiently as a without-ground-situation, a factor for a new anti-structural form of aesthetics, bringing out the social play of the artists as a field of observation. Would an evaluation of aesthetics be efficient to produce social justice?

How one becomes a communicant in the social wholeness? The answer is to be found is all the above-mentioned works. The social games at the canteen correspond to the roles, the dispositions, and the situational reactions of the social. Can the artistic re-writing of the “aura” of an environment of social relationships (a canteen) wipe out its teleological functionalism as a cheap way of alimentation? And can it develop the administration of a such fragmented non-continuous fragile social organization?

The poetry of Panagiotis Arvanitis, Lena Kallergi, Natalia Katsou, Anestis Melidonis, Theodoros Papaioannou, and Magda Hristopoulou, as a web without welding bead, it is being heard as a whisper in the public space but more loudly in the driver’s cabin, conveying debris of poetic visualizations: the canteen is being filled with the aura of the streets; some times, it acts as a psychiatric clinic; it is full of scents of self-moving thoughts of long smoke in and out of the noise of the city, teaching you how to eat with your “ten fingers”; the canteen becomes the crossroad of a journey that belongs to everyone and to nobody, and the owners are confederates in a continuous murder; by listening to poetry, one might realize the propaganda; one can answer at the question regarding the prize of the food; one will learn how fear satisfies its thirst; one will learn how to make a coffee and a cheese-pie; how to write poetry in the shape of internal bleeding. Nothing is self-taught.

Το Πεδίο Δράσης Κόδρα 2011, η εικαστική έκθεση σύγχρονης τέχνης την οποία διοργανώνει ο Δήμος Καλαμαριάς αποτελεί έναν από τους παλαιότερους και σημαντικότερους μη μουσειακούς θεσμούς σύγχρονης τέχνης στην Ελλάδα, με την υποστήριξη της Αντιδημαρχίας Πολιτισμού και συμμετέχει στη Μπιενάλε Νέων Καλλιτεχνών της Μεσογείου με το project «Action field kodra’s stalking horses».

Για να ανταποκριθεί στις συνθήκες και τις ανάγκες μιας ταραγμένης εποχής, η τέχνη οφείλει πλέον να επανακτήσει το ρόλο της ως μηχανισμός κοινωνικής συνοχής και ως φορέας ιδεολογικής και πολιτικής καινοτομίας. Φέτος αποπειράται ένα διπλό άνοιγμα: της σύγχρονης τέχνης στο δημόσιο χώρο, και του Δήμου Καλαμαριάς στο Δήμο Θεσσαλονίκης.

Μέσα στο πλαίσιο του διπλού αυτού ανοίγματος με το project «Action field kodra’s stalking horses», ολοκληρώνει αυτή την απόπειρα διείσδυσης στον αστικό ιστό της πόλης. Χρησιμοποιώντας υπονομευτικά τις καντίνες, συνθέτει εικόνες που προσπαθούν με μια αφήγηση, μια ιστορία, έναν μύθο, να ενεργοποιήσουν, ένα σχόλιο σχετικά με την θέα του κόσμου και του εαυτού μας, την αυτοδιάθεση ενάντια στον εγκλωβισμό, τον αποκλεισμό, τη μετοχή στα κοινά εισφέροντας προεκτάσεις σκέψης. Εικόνες που προσπαθούν να διατυπώσουν με βιωματικό τρόπο μία ερμηνευτική έτσι όπως αποκαλύπτεται μέσα στην αλληλουχία τους, με μια φιλοσοφία ποιητική που ίσως επιφέρει συνειδητοποιήσεις αυτοσυνειδησίας ώστε να μπορούμε να συναρθρώσουμε την αντίσταση απέναντι σε μια αγοραία απορρύθμιση, αναμορφώνοντας και διεκδικώντας διαρκώς τα μέσα, για να επανερμηνεύουμε εμπράκτως και να συμβάλλουμε στη συνδιαμορφώση ενός κόσμου στον οποίο μετέχουμε και κατοικούμε.

Οι γνώριμες για την λειτουργία τους καντίνες, αποκτούν και δημιουργούν μία νοητή σημειολογική διαδρομή στον άξονα της παραλίας της Θεσσαλονίκης ως τοπόσημα πρόχειρης εστίασης μέσα στο δημόσιο χώρο και την οργανωμένη ζωή της πόλης, λειτουργώντας ταυτόχρονα και ως τοπόσημα στιγμών του καθημερινού αστικού χρόνου. Συνθέτουν με μια ρυθμολογία εικαστικές διεκδικήσεις του αστικού τοπίου, με πρωταγωνιστές εικαστικούς καλλιτέχνες, μουσικούς, ποιητές και τους θεατές-θαμώνες που οικειοποιούνται την πρόσοψη και τα παρασκήνια του αθέατου και αβίωτου δημόσιου χώρου της Θεσσαλονίκης, εμπλεκόμενοι ανυποψίαστοι ή υποψιασμένοι στη πρόζα του κόσμου…

ΤΕΚΜΗΡΙΩΣΗ

Σε συνεργασία με το Πεδίο Δράσης Κόδρα του Δήμου Καλαμαριάς, με την υποστήριξη της Αντιδημαρχίας Πολιτισμού Θεσσαλονίκης και την Μπιενάλε Νέων Καλλιτεχνών της Μεσογείου, το 3ο 3ικαστικό 3ργαστήριο Ζωγραφικής του Τμήματος Εικαστικών & Εφαρμοσμένων Τεχνών Φλώρινας του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Μακεδονίας, σε συντονισμό με το 1ο Εργαστήριο Ζωγραφικής, θα ερευνήσει τη σημασιοδότηση της καντίνας (τοπόσημο) και τη διεισδυτική της χωρική λειτουργία («Δούρειος ίππος») σε όλα σχεδόν τα γεγονότα αστικής συνάθροισης πλήθους. Η συμμετοχή αυτή, ταυτόχρονα, θα αποτελέσει και την πρώτη απολαυόμενη έκθεση της διερεύνησης της θεματικής του «+τάγματος» στο έκδοχο «Πλατειά-Ζω».Ο Χώρος γίνεται Τόπος και ο Τόπος είναι ο χώρος, το πεδίο ενσωμάτωσης του ατόμου στην κοινωνία (The place is the space). Η εικαστική λειτουργία θα στηριχθεί στη ζωογόνα εκφώνηση ποίησης για να ενεργοποιήσει-συγκροτήσει τη δούρεια ιδέα μιας ευρείας αμφισημίας του κοινωνικού απέναντι στον απροκάλυπτο και χυδαίο ατομικισμό. Το τοπόσημο «Δούρειος Καντίνα» διεισδύει μέσα στο διαμορφωμένο κοινωνικό και πολιτικό τοπίο οργανώνοντας ασυμμετρίες και ιδιομορφίες εκεί που «αράζεις», εκεί που περνάς το χρόνο σου, εκεί που πλατειάζεις, εκεί που +τροφεύεις στο φαινομενικά φιλήσυχο τοπίο.

Η βιβλική ευημερία μετά τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο πόλεμο, με τους οικονομολόγους να μαθηματικοποιούν την εγωιστική υπόθεση από τη μια πλευρά και μια περιορισμένη ελίτ να μακιγιάρει το προσωπείο του συμφέροντος ή της φιλαυτίας από την άλλη, έκανε τον τρόπο ζωής να συνίσταται σε πολιτική έκφανση μιας απέλπιδος ανθρωπολογίας και να οργανώνεται μέσα στην Αγορά και το αφηρημένο Δίκαιο.

Η περίπτωση της εικαστικής διερεύνησης των καντινών ως Δούρειων ίππων αποτελεί και έναν εμπειρικό έλεγχο αυτής της παραπάνω εντύπωσης. «Η καντίνα είναι ο Δούρειος ίππος σε γεγονότα πλήθους»: αυτή η πρόταση αποτελεί μια υπόθεση γύρω από την οργάνωση (υλική και συμβολική) της κοινωνικότητας και τις κοινωνικές σχέσεις μέσα σε μια κυρίαρχη εμπορευματική πραγματικότητα. Οι καλλιτέχνες που συνδράμουν στην έρευνα αυτή και οι θεατές θα την επαληθεύσουν ή θα την διαψεύσουν στη βάση μιας εμπειρικής φαινομενολογίας. Το να προβάλεις πάνω στη μικρο-κοινωνική πραγματικότητα της καντίνας τα μακρο-φαινόμενα του κοινωνικού εαυτού, είναι ένας τρόπος να εστιάσεις στην μορφή των κοινωνικών δομών. Πράγματι η προσπάθεια επικεντρώνεται σε εκείνη τη δέσμη εικαστικών έργων και ποιημάτων που τονίζουν την εγγενή ασυνέχεια, το ανοιχτό, το εύθραυστο, το εύπλαστο του κοινωνικού στοιχείου, π.χ. της κοινωνικότητας της καντίνας.

Δύο λήμματα αντιθέτου έννοιας με μία πρόθεση, συντάσσουν γραμματικά αλλά και εννοιολογικά τον τίτλο αυτού του καλλιτεχνικού δρώμενου.

Ο τίτλος "Όασις εν αοάσει" περιγράφει δυο αντικρουόμενες αλλά ταυτόχρονα συνυπάρχουσες διαστάσεις, τις οποίες το δρώμενο αυτό σκοπεύει να πραγματευτεί και να σχολιάσει.

Μία όαση σύγχρονης καλλιτεχνικής δράσης, μέσα σε ένα κατεστημένο καλλιτεχνικής ανομβρίας και "ξεραΐλας" όπως αυτό που χαρακτηρίζει την γύρω περιοχή, που ελάχιστα απέχει από τον καλλιτεχνικό πυρήνα της χώρας μας, την Αθήνα.

To "Όασις εν αοάσει" είναι ένα πολυδιάστατο καλλιτεχνικό δρώμενο μέσω του οποίου θα παρουσιαστούν στο κοινό, σύγχρονες καλλιτεχνικές δημιουργίες από τους τομείς των Εικαστικών, του Θεάτρου και του Χορού.

Πρόκειται για ένα εγχείρημα που φιλοδοξεί να γίνει θεσμός και να ενεργοποιήσει το χώρο και το ρόλο του Σκιρώνειου Μουσείου σε σχέση με τη γύρω περιοχή και την σύγχρονη καλλιτεχνική σκηνή.

Κύριος στόχος αυτού του εγχειρήματος είναι η προσέλκυση της καλλιτεχνικής κοινότητας στο Σκιρώνειο Μουσείο Πολυχρονόπουλου, που αποτελεί στολίδι για την περιοχή και δυστυχώς παραμένει άγνωστο στον περισσότερο κόσμο. Το Μουσείο είναι δημιούργημα του γλύπτη Κώστα Πολυχρονόπουλου, από τον οποίο πήρε και το όνομά του.

Collaboration and Conversation: Greek and American Artists

A project by Rachel Moore in collaboration with Dimitris Michalaros

Emerging artists from Thessaloniki, Athens and Chicago are invited to participate in an exhibition

of personal narratives generated from cross-cultural dialogue by answering: How do you interpret

your cultural pasts? How does this effect your work individually and the perception of

contemporary art in your respective countries? What local and global issues are of current personal

importance?

Exhibited first in Thessaloniki, the exhibition will at once be an art product and a public program,

and will spring from an open, collaborative process. An exchange of knowledge, ideas, and

influences will spur each artist to create new work in response to discussion, as they each contend

with where they situate themselves politically in contemporary culture and within their historical

past.

DYNAMO Project Space in Thessaloniki, Greece (www.dynamoprojectspace.blogspot.com) will

host the preview event in April 2010: the commencement of dialogue between Chicago, Athens

and Thessaloniki artists. Work by the invited artists will be displayed along with a series of

performances and readings. Simultaneously Spoke, in Chicago (www.spokechicago.blogspot.com),

will host the first teleconferencing event for Chicago based artists. The second phase of the project

will be located in a museum in Thessaloniki, Greece (location TBA).

Artists who wish to participate may work in the field of sculpture, performance, photography,

printmaking, video, sound, electronic arts, drawing, painting, writing, or design. Artists do not

need to show past work situated in the public forum with participatory or collaborative projects,

but do need to have an invested interest in doing so for this exhibition. Interest should be in

discussing current local and global issues and producing works that attempt to evoke change or

new understanding by involving the public in some way. Events will be part of the exhibition and

may include writers, performers, or musicians. All conversation will be held in English.

Participants will need to attend monthly meetings and regularly contribute to conversation on a

blog.

Interested participants should submit a resume, artist statement, a paragraph of why they want to

be included/how their work is relevant, and 10 images of work to chicagothessaloniki@gmail.com

by February 26, 2010. Image files should be formatted to 19cm x 25cm at 100ppi, or 1024 x 768

pixels. Files should not exceed 10 megabites in total. Video and sound work should be no longer

than 3 minutes and up to 3 pieces. Writers are encouraged to submit 5 writing samples.

Rachel Moore is an artist who works on public and community -based projects in addition to her studio

practice. She currently is living in Thessaloniki as a Fulbright Fellow and comes from Chicago, U.S.A.

"Kinesynaesthetic Organism" is a kinetic sculpture that addresses the permeable relationships between object and space, image and sound. The synaesthetic experience of the piece offers a means of translating these interactions into a system. Moving image becomes a form in which the visual interacts with the sonic. The piece challenges the perceived ephemerality of technology traditionally contrasted with the timelessness of art. The elements in the piece function as organs that together constitute a self-contained organism. Reconfigured, manipulated technological instruments are left exposed. These exposures challenge the standard expectations of technology, emphasizing less the harmony than the collision and ensuing conversation between materials.

Το "Domestic Tension" είναι ένα project του Γουαφά Μπιλάλ ( Wafaa
Bilal), που λαμβάνει χώρα αυτό τον καιρό στο Σικάγο, στις γκαλερί FlatFile.
Στο project αυτό, εγώ με δύο καλλιτέχνες και καθηγητές του τμήματος Art
& Technology του School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Νταν Μίλερ
(Dan Miller) και Μπεν Τσανγκ (Ben Chang) , συνεισφέραμε στο να
υλοποιηθεί, στήνοντας ο καθένας στον τομέα του, το αντίστοιχο κομμάτι
του Project.
Ο Γουαφά, θα ζήσει για 28 μέρες μέσα στη γκαλερί, όπου και έχει
διαμορφώσει σε προσωπικό και ζωτικό του χώρο.
Η μόνη όμως διαφορά είναι, ότι στον χώρο του αυτόν, βρίσκεται
εγκατεστημένο, ένα ρομποτικά κατευθυνόμενο αεροβόλο όπλο του πέιντμπολ
(Paintball), του οποίου τον έλεγχο μπορεί να έχει ο οποιοσδήποτε, μέσω
του ηλεκτρονικού του υπολογιστή και του ίντερνετ.
Η ρομποτική αυτή κατασκευή, διαθέτει μια κάμερα που παρακολουθεί το
χώρο, 24 ώρες το 24ωρο σε λογική Big Brother, στοχεύοντας προς την
κατεύθυνση που κινείται το όπλο. Ο θεατής, μέσω της οπτικής του
επαφής, μπορεί να πυροβολήσει, σε οποιοδήποτε σημείο του δωματίου του
καλλιτέχνη, θέλει, ακόμα και προς τον ίδιο τον καλλιτέχνη. Η σφαίρες
είναι γεμάτες με κίτρινη μπογιά, που αφήνουν το αποτύπωμά τους, εκεί
που στόχευσε και πυροβόλησε, ο καθένας. Η επιλογή του χρώματος φυσικά,
δεν είναι καθόλα τυχαία, αφού κίτρινο, είναι το χρώμα που επέλεξαν οι Αμερικάνοι, για να υποστηρίξουν τον τις στρατιωτικές δυνάμεις- επιχειρήσεις.
Γενικότερα όμως, σε αυτό το χρώμα αποδίδονται τα αρνητικά χαρακτηριστικά της διαμάχης, εριστικότητας, δογματικότητας και θυμού.
Το project αυτό έχει σαφές πολιτικό στίγμα, μιας και ο Γουαφά, -ώς
Ιρακινός καλλιτέχνης-, επικαλείται την ανησυχία, τον εγκλεισμό, την
βία και τον ψηφιακά κατευθυνόμενο πόλεμο, που καθημερινά έρχονται
αντιμέτωποι οι συμπατριώτες του, αλλά και ο υπόλοιπος κόσμος.
Ένας κόσμος, που βαλλόμενος από όλες αυτές τις εικόνες- πληροφορίες,
καθημερινά στη ζωή του, -τηλεόραση- εφημερίδες- διαδίκτυο κτλ.-,
ανήμπορος να αμυνθεί ή να βοηθήσει, εξαναγκάζεται σε μια «εξοικείωση»
Βλέπουμε καθημερινά τον αντίκτυπο στη ζωή μας.
Ακόμα και το πιο πρόσφατο συμβάν, με την ακαδημαϊκή κοινότητα των
Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών να προσπαθεί μέχρι και σήμερα, να επουλώσει τις
πληγές, την θλίψη και την οδύνη, από το φονικό στο Τεχνολογικό
Πανεπιστήμιο της Βιρτζίνια (Virginia Tech), με 33 νεκρούς.
Το όπλο λοιπόν, ή αν θέλετε, η όλη διαδικασία, μας είναι οικεία.
Το μόνο που μένει, είναι μέσω της ασφάλειας, που μας προσφέρει το
διαδίκτυο, παρέχοντας ανωνυμία, να δοκιμάσουμε τον εαυτό μας στο πόσο
μας έχει επηρεάσει η νέα πραγματικότητα, στην οποία ζούμε.
Είναι λοιπόν ένα άλλοθι η καλλιτεχνική πραγματικότητα, ή αντιθέτως η αποκάλυψη μιας σκληρής πραγματικότητας όπου βιώνουμε στην καθημερινότητα μας;
Ο καλλιτέχνης, είναι θύμα, ή είναι κάποιος που προσπαθεί με αυτόν τον τρόπο, να μας δείξει ότι εμείς είμαστε τα θύματα μιας ελεγχόμενης κατάστασης.

“Domestic Tension” is a project by Wafaa Bilal presently taking place at FlatFile Gallery of Chicago. Along with Dan Miller and Ben Chang, two artists/professors from the Art and Technology department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I contributed to the design and construction of the "Domestic Tension" project. Each of us had to set up the correspondent part of his section where Wafaa is going to live inside the gallery for 28 days. For this reason he has transformed the room of the gallery to his own sole personal room. However there is a vital difference in this room from an ordinary personal space. In this room, a paintball gun is installed and aimed toward Wafaa's room. The paintball gun is manipulated and controlled robotically and linked to the internet by which anyone with internet access can log on and shoot Wafaa, or his surroundings, with paintballs propelled with violent force. This robotic device is equipped with a camera that observes the room 24-hours per day, in a Big Brother-sense. Wherever the internet user points the camera, he or she is also pointing the gun in that direction. The spectator is free to shoot wherever he or she wants, even towards the artist. The bullets are filled with yellow paint (the choice of color is not accidental -- it transgressively signifies the Support the Troops yellow ribbons) and leave their mark. I feel that, in general, the color yellow also has to do with the negative characteristics of anger, conflict, warning, bellicosity, and dogmatism. This project has a clear political message, because Wafaa is an Iraqi artist. He appeals the disquietude and chaos, displacement, incessant violence, and the digital or virtual nature of the war, which his compatriots and the whole world has to face, every day. A world in which the citizens are deluged with all these pictures and information from the television, the newspapers and the internet. At the end they are unable to protect their personalities, and they are forced to familiarize themselves in this new reality. All of us can see the negative consequences in our everyday life.
A characteristic recent example of this situation is the sad incident in the University of Virginia (Virginia Tech). This brutal attack left behind 33 dead students. The academic community of USA still hasn’t healed its wounds or cured the pain of this slaughter.
The question here is how much have we all been influenced and affected by violent culture, detachment and perhaps apathy. With this project and the safety of the anonymity that the internet offers us we can test ourselves. After all, the procedure is already known and familiar!!!
At the end, we can question ourselves if the artistic reality is just an alibi, or if this is something which will make us see the naked truth we are living in our everyday life.
Is the artist a victim, or is he someone who is trying to remind us, that we are the victims of a manipulated situation.

After graduating from the department of Fine and Applied Arts at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, the next step of my career was a project on the pasta industry ABEZ. During collaboration between the department of my school and the industrial union of Greece, I accepted, after being asked, to make two artworks for the ABEZ industry. This turned out to be an excellent opportunity for me to continue my research, while further exploring the variety of the ideas that my artwork suggests.

My research covers, among other things, the involving value that industrial materials hold when included in art, correlation between the engineer and the artist and also, electrical energy in conjunction with mechanical energy. Personally, I also involve in my research the influence of capitalism to the status of societies, politics in common people's lives, as well as consumerism and overindulgence.

For four months I used storage space as a studio at the factory. I wanted to fit in with the factory’s employees; to be one of them, and to gain an insider's perspective on the industry. Evidently, the daily functions of the factory involved the correlation between the engineer and the artist; the Kinetic Art movement, researched since the 1950’s.

The title of this construction is simply called ABEZ. I was inspired by a silo, an industrial container used for storage and mobility of products. There were enough premises for an installation, so I decided to construct a replica that distinguishes a space. As in all my work, I used materials that apply to industrial history, technology, and production process. One of the main focuses of my work is the variety of ways materials, meanings and media are mutually intertwined.

This construction is a replica of the factory, which reflects on almost every industry.

PERFORMANCE "ΣΥΓΚΡΟΥΣΗ"

Στην Performance "Σύγκρουση", που προέκυψε μέσω της συνεργασίας μου με τον συνθέτη Μιχάλη Σαπουντζή (ο οποίος επιμελήθηκε εξολοκλήρου το μουσικό κομμάτι της, γράφοντας ένα κομμάτι για πιάνο και κινητήρα αυτοκινήτου), το πιάνο και το αυτοκίνητο είναι δύο συγκρουόμενες φόρμες όπου κάθε μια από αυτές αντιπροσωπεύει διαφορετικές έννοιες.
Το αυτοκίνητο, ως το σύμβολο του Κεφαλαίου αλλά και του σύγχρονου τρόπου ζωής, αντιπροσωπεύει την πλειοψηφία του κοινωνικού μας συνόλου, που κυριαρχούμενο από τεχνοκρατικές αντιλήψεις, βάζει σχεδόν μοναδική προτεραιότητα στη ζωή του την απόκτηση υλικών αγαθών, φιλοδοξώντας κοινωνική καταξίωση μέσω της οικονομικής του επιφάνειας.
Σαν σύμβολο φυσικά πρεσβεύει και την αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία με την τόσο μεγάλη επιρροή στο οικονομικό Status πολλών κρατών και την ευημερία αυτών ανά τον κόσμο.
Το δε πιάνο, ως ελάσσων ταυτόχρονα φόρμα απέναντι στο αυτοκίνητο, αντιπροσωπεύει την μειοψηφούσα μερίδα της κοινωνίας μας, που προτεραιότητα στη ζωή της έχει την γνώση και την ανάγκη έκφρασης. Αυτή που δεν επιδιώκει την απόκτηση ενός ωραιοποιημένου περιτυλίγματος για το κοινωνικό της προφίλ, αλλά επενδύει στο περιεχόμενο.
Η τέχνη είναι περιεχόμενο. Η τέχνη είναι όμως και εξαρτημένη σε μεγάλο βαθμό από το κεφάλαιο και φυσικά συνηθίζει να χαρακτηρίζεται ως “ρομαντική στάση” απέναντι στα υλιστικά δεδομένα της εποχής μας.
Η Performance αυτή διαδραματίζει την σθεναρή αντίσταση που πραγματικά προβάλει η σύγχρονη τέχνη στις μέρες μας, απέναντι σε λογικές που τη θέλουν για τους δικούς τους λόγους, εφήμερη, διακοσμητική, μοδάτη και light.
Ο τίτλος “Συγκρουση”, σε συνδυασμό με τις παραπομπές του έργου, οδηγεί αναπόφευκτα το συνειρμό κάθε υγιούς εγκεφάλου, στη καθημερινή και ανελέητη σύγκρουση αντίθετων ιδεολογιών, χρωμάτων, θρησκειών και οικονομικών συμφερόντων, ανά τον κόσμο, στο βωμό της δύναμης και του χρήματος. Ο κόσμος όμως αυτός μοιράζεται την ίδια γη και τα ίδια ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα. Ποιος θα δώσει τέλος στον θόρυβο αυτής της αδιάκοπης μηχανής που όσο δυνατή κι αν είναι, πάντα θα διψάει για παραπάνω δύναμη, υπερκαλύπτοντας τους γαλήνιους ρυθμούς και ήχους της φυσιολογικής ζωής.

PERFORMANCE "COLLISION"

In the performance, “Collision”, which was realized through a collaboration with composer Mihalis Sapountzis, who wrote a piece for the piano, an automobile motor and the piano represent two conflicting forms. The automobile looms as a symbol of Capital and the contemporary way of life, representing the majority of our social circle--a circle that is dominated by technocratic perception, establishing almost exclusively the consumption of material goods as the priority of life, aspiring to achieve social stature through financial viability.

As a symbol, the automobile overtly embodies the automotive industry, which has a significant influence on the economic status of many countries and helps determine their prosperity over the whole world. The piano, on the other hand, as a minor figure compared to the car, accordingly represents the marginalized division of our society, the one whose main concerns revolve around knowledge and the need for expression; the one that refrains from pursuing an artificially decorated outer shell for its social profile, but instead invests in interiority, genuineness, depth.

Art is the pursuit of meaning, truth, and depth, but art also greatly relies on Capital and, naturally, is familiar as a “romantic stance” against the contemporary material realities.
This performance illustrates the vigorous resistance of contemporary art against certain elements in the art world which, for dubious reasons, want art to be ephemeral, decorative, modish and light.

The title, “Collision”, as it relates to the artwork, leads the viewers to consider the constant oppositions of idealogies, systems of value, and economic interests of the world. These oppositions clash non-stop and everyday; neither do they lose intensity because of their daily conflict, nor does the Capitalist machine ever relent in drawing everything into the altar of power and money. The performance, "Collision", not only dramatizes this conflict but also attempts to bring it to an allegorical climax. In this world we all share the same land and the same capacity for humanity; but things have been corrupted, and who is going to put an end to the noise and destruction of this uninterrupted machine which, despite how strong it is and how much it consumes, will always be thirsty for more power, suffocating the calm and taking the harmony out of life.

Η δεύτερη ενότητα της δουλειάς μου ξεκίνησε με αφορμή ένα πείραμα που έλαβε χώρα στο Τμήμα Εικαστικών και Εφαρμοσμένων Τεχνών , της Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, σκοπός του οποίου ήταν να δημιουργήσουν οι φοιτητές του τμήματος έργα εμπνευσμένα από το έργο του συνθέτη Ανέστη Λογοθέτη.
Ο Ανέστης Λογοθέτης στάθηκε αρχικά το ερέθισμα για να ξεκινήσω αυτή την σειρά έργων αλλά από πολύ νωρίς διεύρυνα την έρευνα μου προς την μουσική και την ιστορία της γενικότερα. Η δουλειά των Alexander Skryabin, John Cage και Ιάννη Ξενάκη ήταν βασικοί σταθμοί στο πεδίο της έρευνας αυτής.
Η δουλειά μου πραγματεύεται την σχέση ήχου και εικαστικού αποτελέσματος με μοναδικό σκοπό την αρμονική συνύπαρξη τους μέσα σε ένα αμιγώς εικαστικό έργο. Ο ήχος μετατρέπεται σε θορύβους, ολισθαίνοντες ήχους και κρότους, στοιχεία που θεωρούνται μουσικά “σκουπίδια” στο Δυτικό τονικό σύστημα.
Σκουπίδια σαν αυτά που μαζεύω από τους κάδους ανακύκλωσης, τα παλιατζίδικο και τα μπάζα για να φτιάξω τις κατασκευές μου. Τα σκουπίδια κουβαλάνε έννοιες τις οποίες χρησιμοποιώ ως μια έμμεση και συνάμα άμεση κριτική προς το κοινωνικό μας σύστημα. Είναι ένα μέσο που βοηθάει τη δουλειά μου να αρθρώσει μια καυστική πολιτική θέση.
Αν δεχτούμε ότι το έργο τέχνης εμπεριέχει μέσα του ποιότητα και διαχρονικότητα, τότε το γεγονός ότι αυτά τα αντικείμενα αποκτούν μια άλλη περιπέτεια από αυτήν για την οποία προορίζονταν και ξαναμπαίνουν σε ένα σπίτι, μια γκαλερί ή ένα μουσείο αυτό προκαλεί μια έντονη αντίθεση και ειρωνεία.
Σημαντικές επιρροές έχει δεχθεί η δουλειά μου από τον Άσγκερ Γιορν στην Art Cinetique, τον Γιάννη Κουνέλλη στην Arte Povera όπως και του Nam June Paik στο κίνημα των Fluxus.

The second unit of my artwork was initiated by the grounds of an experiment that took place at the Department of Pictorial and Applied Arts, at the School of Fine Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The purpose of this experiment was the creation of art projects by students of the corresponding department that were inspired by the work of composer Anestis Logothetis.
Anestis Logothetis’s work initially stimulated me to begin a number of projects. Later I expanded my research to music and its history in general. Some basic influences throughout my research incorporated the works of Alexander Skryabin, John Cage and Ioannis Xenakis.
My artwork deals with the association between sound and pictorial result, with the solitary purpose of their harmonious coexistence in a pure pictorial artwork. Sound transforms into noise, gliding modes and clatters; data that is considered musical “garbage” to the western tone system. Trash, like the items I collect from recycling bins, junk shops and rubbles to create my artworks.
This kind of garbage symbolizes the concepts which I indirectly, yet in some instances directly use as critique to our social system. These are means that help my artwork articulate a caustic political standpoint. If we accept that a work of art is diachronic and quality integrated, then the fact that these objects acquire a new fate, rather than the one that they were predestined to, i.e. reentering a house, an art gallery o a museum, call for an intense antithesis and irony.
My artwork has been influenced by Asger Jorn from the Art Cinetique movement, Ioannis Kounellis from the Arte Povera movement and Nam June Paik from the Fluxus movement.

Η φύση του πρώτου σκέλους της δουλειάς μου είναι τέτοια, που καθιστά πολύ επικίνδυνη την κάθε
προσπάθεια περιγραφής της με λόγια.
Με πολύ προσοχή θα αναφέρω λοιπόν ότι κάθε έργο μου είναι ένα ξεχωριστό σχόλιο για την
κατάσταση που επικρατεί στη σημερινή κοινωνία, είναι πολιτική θέση. Τις εικόνες μου τις διέπουν
έντονες αντιθέσεις και ειρωνεία, που υπογραμμίζουν ένα ρεαλιστικό τοπίο, το οποίο μέσα στον
κατακλυσμό των πληροφοριών της καθημερινότητας, μας περνά απαρατήρητο.
Κάθε έργο μου είναι και μια ξεχωριστή έρευνα πάνω στα υλικά και τις τεχνικές, των οποίων
η μελέτη είναι καθοριστική ώστε το αποτέλεσμα να πείθει εννοιολογικά, ζωγραφικά αλλά και
κατασκευαστικά.
Οι επιρροές μου ξεκινούν από τον Nouveau Realisme του Αρμάν, συνεχίζουν με τον Φωτογραφικό
Ρεαλισμό των γλυπτών του Hanson, κλέβουν στοιχεία από τη φιλοσοφία της Arte Povera,
συναντούν τις φιγούρες του Κανιάρη, τελειώνοντας στις μέρες μας στα γλυπτά του Ron Mueck και
εγκαταστάσεις του Maurizio Cattelan.

URBAN LANDSCAPES | CONSTRUCTIONS 2004 - 2005

The nature of the first completed unit of my work is such, that it makes every attempt of orally describing it rather complex.
I am, therefore, only straightforwardly able to say that each one of my creations is a unique critique on the current social status quo, more like a personal political standpoint.
My pictures are defined by sharp contrasts and irony, which, in essence, highlight a realistic landscape, one that we do not seem to apprehend due to the overflow of everyday information. Each one of my projects is a discrete research on the materials and techniques, the study of which I find essential for artistic, semantic and structural persuasion.
Some of my influences include Arman’s Nouveau Realisme, the photographic realism of Hanson’s sculptures, elements from the Arte Povera philosophy, Kaniari’s figures and, more recently, Ron Mueck’s sculptures and Maurizio Cattelan’s installations.
